Welcome! North Derbyshire Refugee Support Group (NDRSG) has been in existence since 2018 supporting refugees arriving in the North Derbyshire area. Since 2016, with Central Government funding, Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has been involved in welcoming and accommodating Syrian refugees as part of the UN Resettlement scheme.NDRSG grew out of the work being done by Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Stand up to Racism to support Syrian refugees to settle in to their local communities. The group has expanded and is open to any refugees and asylum seekers and members of the local community who wish to support them.
We provide material support and friendship, activities, courses and opportunities for refugees to take part
in the wider community and help refugees observe their own culture and to share these with the
communities they live in.
Refugees often arrive in the UK with nothing and face the daunting challenges of a new life in an
unfamiliar environment. Our message is Refugees are welcome here!

The 1951 Refugee Convention defines a refugee as: “someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.”
